ABOUT US

ABOUT US

Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good governance (CEDGG) is a grassroot civil society organization which was founded in 1995 and works to empower vulnerable people groups and ethnic communities on their governance and development rights. The head office of the organization is located in Nakuru town.

CEDGG, formerly known as ENDOROIS was first formed as a Community Based Organisation to advocate for socio-economic rights of the marginalized groups/communities in Baringo and Koibatek districts. With time however, CEDGG expanded its scope and geographical coverage. Currently, the organisation undertakes its programmes with a special focus to Rift Valley province of Kenya.

Its mandate is empowering vulnerable groups through training, advocacy, networking and linkages in areas of human and constitutional rights, cultural heritage and equitable distribution of resources. Beneficiaries include disadvantaged groups such as ethnic minorities, women, youth, children, Internally Displaced Persons and the poor.

The Organization is a founder member of the Constitution and Reform Education Consortium (CRECO); a network of Civil Society Organizations aimed at just governance, constitutionalism and respect for just laws. CEDGG is also a founder member of Social and Political Accountability Network (SPAN)), a network of CSOs in policy and public governance work in Kenya.

Thematic/Programmatic focus
CEDGG’s Thematic/Programmatic focus is informed by the situation analysis and the strategic priorities as outlined in the 2008- 2012 strategic plan.  CEDGG will focus on three broad programmatic areas that will form the bedrock of its activities in pursuance of the strategic priorities. These are:

·        Governance and Development
CEDGG will work to empower the vulnerable and minority groups through civic education, awareness creation, advocacy and capacity building so us to ensure democratic governance and participatory development. Through this program, CEDGG will seek to positively contribute to democratic governance and development of its target groups/communities. The program will address strategic priorities through the following strategies with the goal of enhancing the capacity of vulnerable and minority groups to participate effectively in public affairs, and also make informed choices when electing their leaders.

Strategies
·        Promoting democratic and informed election of leadership.
·        Participating in identification and prioritisation of local development projects through decentralised funds
·        Reduce corruption and enhance local service delivery through improved check and balances/accountability
·        Promote the flow of information on local governance and development processes.
·        Mainstream gender in local governance and development process.
·        Promote pro poor policy in local and national development programmes.

·        Human Rights and Policy Reforms
Among the most serious problems facing the minorities and vulnerable communities/groups is abuse of their human rights. The need therefore to have programs, activities, approaches that focus on promoting equality and human dignity cannot be gainsaid in shaping CEDGG’s strategy and work ethic. It is for this reason that CEDGG identifies promotion and protection of the rights of its targets as a core program in this strategic plan.

In the period of the strategic plan (2008 – 20012), CEDGG will seek to entrench a culture of peaceful co-existence and the upholding and protection of Human Rights by adopting a more visible, explicit and conscious approach to its work. CEDGG will seek to identify pro-active measures to stem the most prevalent violations such as social exclusion, ethnic chauvinism, socio-political violence, gender-based intolerance and structural discrimination against traditionally marginalized communities/groups. To effectively undertake the foregoing task, CEDGG will also seek for legal regime and policy that are responsive to the needs and uniqueness of its targets through systematic need-based policy interventions aimed at strengthening public service delivery.

The overall goal of this programme is to attain an entrenched culture of protection and promotion of human rights of minority and vulnerable groups through civic education and policy interventions by 2012.  In pursuance of this goal, CEDGG will appropriately employ a number of strategies.

Strategies
·        Entrenching a culture of peaceful  coexistence through building the capacity of target group on conflict prevention and peace building
·        Identify proactive measures to stem the most prevalent human rights violations such as social exlusion, ethnic chauvism, social and political violence, gender based intolerance and structural discrimination against traditionally marginalised communities and groups
·        Advocacy for the domestication of human right treaties (which Kenya is signatory to) through community empowerment and awareness programmes.
·        Advocacy on legal regime and policies which are responsive to the needs and uniqueness of vulnerable/marginalised communities and groups through research networking with likeminded civil society groups.
·        Promote community awareness on civic rights and responsibility.
·        Protect the property rights of ethnic minority groups

·        Human Capital and Organizational Development
CEDGG,  like many other Civil Society Organizations, is faced with a myriad challenges due to the emerging issues emanating from its internal dynamics, and external socio-political and economic shifts on the Kenyan, regional and global scene.  For CEDGG to effectively harness the opportunities or handle the challenges, its internal capabilities should be strengthened. Under this strategic focus, CEDGG will develop and implement programs aimed at building its capacities and institutional culture to achieve optimum results through the following strategies:

Strategies
·        Implementation and Review of organisation policies and systems in light of changing operating environment.
·        Improve resource mobilisation
·        Staff capacity appraisal and training for optimal performance
·        Team building and motivational activities
·        Effective monitoring and evaluation of organisation undertakings.
·        Improve the use of information technology in organisation work.
·        Improve documentation and dissemination of CEDGG activities.
